AMENITIES & SERVICES
What to expect: Opened in August 2000, the Ritz-Carlton incorporates contemporary ideas about what constitutes a pleasurable oceanfront family vacation: lots of recreational facilities, a grand pool, a pretty beach, a full-service health spa, varied dining options, supervised children's activities, attentive service, and spacious grounds embracing sky and sea. Amenity highlights: An enormous free-form pool and adjacent spa lie between an expansive lawn and the beach, with cushioned lounge chairs fitted with folding shades and flags to signal for drink/food service arrayed on a stone deck around the pool. Identical lounge chairs offer sunbathing comfort on a crescent beach along the resort's 1,500-foot oceanfront. From the beach, a paving-stone path winds along a rocky shore, offering romantic oceanfront strolls at night illuminated by ankle-high lights that don't interfere with starlight. Insider tip: Nightly in Cohoba's Lounge, a "rummier" offers a rum sampling along with information about rum's history while a pianist or harpist plays in the background.

Across the road from the hotel and up a green mountainside that was once part of 4,000-acre Rose Hall sugar plantation, the Ritz-Carlton White Witch Golf Course offers 18 holes of championship play featuring a 1,000-foot gain in elevation, rolling hills, and panoramic sea views. Resort guests receive preferred tee times. A practice facility features two tees, two bunkers, and an 11,000-square-foot putting green. Pros offer instruction. (The course's name refers to Annee Palmer, a notorious plantation mistress who is said to have murdered three husbands and a lover, thereby inspiring a popular Jamaican novel The White Witch of Rose Hall.) Two complimentary tennis courts are lit for night play. Bocce is complimentary on the central lawn. On the beach are complimentary kayaks, Hobie-Cats, Sunfish, and sailboats. Complimentary shuttle service is available to Rose Hall Beach Club, where there is a restaurant and bar, showers and changing rooms, and numerous water sports and activities, including scuba diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, parasailing, Jet Skiing, and beach volleyball.
